Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
-
Is this the Official UofG Freshers' Week?Yes - this is the official University of Glasgow Freshers' Week for 2024.
-
Are events just for first years? No! We want to give new students an environment to meet their flatmates, course mates and other students they will experience University life with, so we’ll be using a wristband to limit certain nights to new students. Other nights will be targeted at all students to kick off the start of the new academic year and to finish summer on a high note. Our event timetable, which will be on this site and all our social media, will clearly show which nights and events are for new students, and which are for current students. Most daytime events will be open to all, and this will also be highlighted.
-
Who is eligible for wristbands?Anyone who is starting as a new student at the University of Glasgow in September 2024 is eligible. New students at Glasgow School of Art and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland are also eligible for a wristband!
-
How much do wristbands cost? The wristband costs £50.00 You can still buy a wristband during the week or pay entry to individual events at the door depending on avaliability! The price of the wristband decreases as the week progresses; alternatively you can pay £12.00 entry to individual night time events at the door (you must provide confirmation and photographic ID at the door.) Please note that if you purchase a ticket and are not in your first year of studies you will not be eligible for a refund. Current student events are not covered by the wristband and will have an additional entry fee.
-
Where do I collect my wristband?Wristband collections open from Thursday 12th September at QMU and Friday 13th at GUU. These can be collected from 11am-4.30pm. These collections will stay open for the rest of the week at these set times. You can purchase a wristband via our FIXR page here! As all club nights will be in high demand, it's important to get a band during the day, otherwise you might not get in.
-
What events do I need a wristband for?Wristbands are only necessary for new student events after 8PM (such as club nights, quizzes or gigs). There is no wristband for events aimed at current students or open to all students – anyone can attend these as long as they are a student.
-
Can I buy a wristband in cash?Yes, however we advise you purchase your wristband in advance via our FIXR store here to confirm your space! If you do wish to purchase a wristband in cash, ask one of our Freshers' Helper for Duty Board during collection time at either Union and they'll be able to help you.
-
What are the night buses?During the 9 nights of Freshers' Week, the two Unions lay on buses to transport all students living in University of Glasgow halls of residences to and from the unions. The night buses are completely free for use and there to get you home safely during your first week at Glasgow! The night-bus routes will include: - Murano Street Student Village and Wolfson Hall - Queen Margaret Residences and Winton Drive - Kelvinhaugh Gate, Kelvinhaugh Street, Cairncross House and Maclay Residences These will run from 8pm-3am.
-
Do I have to buy a wristband to take part in all freshers' week activities, such as the freshers fair? Not at all. Many events, especially those during the day, are free to access if you would rather not attend the night time events. Both unions and their facilities are also open to all students during the day if you would like to check them out. The Freshers' Fair, where you can sign up to student societies and get tons of free goodies, is free and open to all students. Glasgow University Sports Association (GUSA) run a sports fair and a range of tasters sessions for sports across the week. These are also open to all students. The Student Representative Council (SRC) also run several other events across the week. These are generally free and open to all students. For more info click here
-
Do I have to be 18 or older to attend? No, under 18’s are eligible for a wristband, although under Scottish licencing law, under 18’s are required to attend earlier if they wish to experience events and be granted entry. Glasgow University Union will not permit entry to under 18s after 10pm. Queen Margret Union will not permit entry to under 18s after 1am. You must still show photographic ID.
-
Can I bring my friend who isn't a UofG student? This year the Queen Margaret Union is allowing Freshers from any Scottish university to attend their events throughout the week. However, they cannot buy wristbands for the week but can buy tickets on the door. (They will need to provide valid ID and proof of studies.) This year the Glasgow University Union is only permitting UofG freshers access to their events.
-
I saw a link to a “Glasgow Freshers Pass” which costs money but promises entry to clubs and events in the city centre – is that official/do you recommend it?Short answer, No. We have seen more and more of these types of events emerge over the years, and whilst some are legitimate, others can be scams or a rip off on normal entry charges, with high drinks prices also common. Our West End campus is the Home of Glasgow Student Nightlife. We absolutely love what the rest of the city has to offer, and absolutely recommend you check it out across your time in Glasgow, but for Freshers week, only the official events will guarantee you’re with other Glasgow students. Don’t get conned out of your Freshers' Week experience, buy your freshers' wristband from us- either in person or online.
-
What is UofG Welcome Week?UofG Welcome includes the Club and Society fair and Sports fair daytime events, which are open to all students, as well as promoting club and society taster sessions. They will also run a range of welcome events designed to reach all parts of the University community, which you can read about here.
-
What are the SRC / GUSA?The Students Representative Council (SRC) and Glasgow University Sports Association (GUSA) are the other 2 student bodies on campus. Whilst the Unions, GUU and QMU, have social spaces and organise night time events, as well as hosting club and society socials and evening activities, the SRC and GUSA focus on daytime activities, working closely with the University on everything from improving the gym to ensuring academic feedback and support services are the best they can be. You can find out more about the SRC here, and GUSA here.
-
What do I do if I have any problems? Please contact us here if you have any problem or further queries. For all academic enquiries, please contact the SRC here.
-
Can I get a refund or transfer my wristband?Refunds are available on request if you are a UofG, GSA or the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland fresher. Freshers' wristbands are not transferable.
